Are you ready to embark on a journey of skill, strategy, and a touch of luck? Welcome to the world of Kubb, the captivating lawn game that has its roots in ancient Scandinavia. Often referred to as "Viking Chess," Kubb is a game that combines elements of bowling, horseshoes, and chess into a unique and engaging experience. Whether you're looking for a new activity for family gatherings, a fun way to spend time with friends, or simply want to enjoy the outdoors, Kubb is the perfect choice. Let's dive into how to play this exciting game!
What is Kubb?
Kubb (pronounced "koob") is a lawn game played between two teams. The objective is to knock over your opponent's wooden blocks (called kubbs) by throwing wooden batons. The game ends when a team successfully topples the "King," a larger wooden block placed in the centre of the playing field. Kubb is a blend of strategy and physical skill, making it suitable for players of all ages.
Setting Up the Game
Kubb Set: Includes 10 kubbs, 1 king, 6 batons, and 4 corner stakes.
Playing Field: A flat, open space measuring approximately 5 metres by 8 metres (16 feet by 26 feet).
Teams: Two teams with 1 to 6 players each.

Setting Up the Field
Mark the Corners: Use the corner stakes to outline the rectangular playing field.
Place the King: Position the King in the centre of the field.
Arrange the Kubbs: Each team sets up 5 kubbs on their baseline (the narrow sides of the rectangle).

How to Play Kubb
Determine Starting Team: A coin toss decides which team goes first or whoever throws nearest the king.
Throwing Batons: Teams take turns throwing batons from behind their baseline. The objective is to knock over the opponent's kubbs.
Opening Turn: The starting team throws all 6 batons, aiming to knock over the opponent's baseline Kubb’s.
Field Kubb’s: Any Kubb’s knocked over by the throwing team are thrown by the opposing team into the throwing team's half of the field. These Kubb’s are then stood up and become "field Kubb’s."
Field Kubb’s Phase: After baseline Kubb’s are knocked down, the opposing team tosses these Kubb’s into the other half of the field, creating field Kubb’s. If any field Kubbs are left in play then this can then be used by the opposing team as a new baseline that gets you closer to the opponents baseline Kubbs. Note if all the field Kubbs are removed then the baseline goes back to the original baseline you used at the start of the day.
Clearing Field Kubb’s: Teams must clear all field Kubb’s before attacking the baseline Kubb’s again. This adds a strategic layer to the game as players aim to position field Kubb’s advantageously.
The King: Once all a team's Kubb’s are knocked over, they can attempt to topple the King. The game is won by the team that successfully knocks over the King.
Winning the Game: The game continues with teams alternating turns until one team knocks
Top Tips for Mastering Kubb
Aim Low: When throwing batons, aim for the lower part of the Kubb’s to increase the chances of a successful knockdown.
Strategic Placement: When tossing knocked-down Kubb’s into your opponent's field, try to place them in difficult positions to hinder their progress.
Team Coordination: Communicate with your teammates to plan your throws and discuss strategies.
Practice: Like any game, practice makes perfect. Spend time honing your throwing technique and developing strategies.
